Weak Hero Manhwa: Story, Characters & Ending

Weak Hero manhwa featuring Yeon Si-eun and his friends

Weak Hero has become one of the defining school violence manhwa of the last several years, and unlike a lot of series in this crowded genre, it manages to earn its reputation through smart writing rather than just shock value. The series is written by Seopass, with artwork handled by Razen, whose real name is Kim Jin-seok, and the pairing between the two creators has produced a comic that reads far more thoughtfully than its brutal cover art might suggest at first glance. It began serialization on Naver back in 2018 before eventually being picked up internationally by Line Webtoon in September of 2019, giving English speaking readers a proper way to follow the story.

The premise sounds simple enough on paper, since it revolves around a school where bullies effectively run the show and adults are barely present to intervene. The story follows Yeon Si-eun, known to English readers under the localized name Gray Yeon, a small and physically unimpressive student who ranks near the top of his class academically. Despite his frail appearance, he refuses to simply accept the abuse being dished out around him, and instead of relying on raw strength he starts using his sharp mind, careful planning, and whatever tools happen to be nearby to fight back against opponents who are almost always bigger and stronger than him.

What makes Si-eun such a compelling lead is that he never becomes some secretly overpowered fighter in the way a lot of underdog stories eventually cheat their way toward. His victories come from cold calculation, exploiting environments, and predicting exactly how his opponents will react under pressure, rather than from some hidden reserve of strength suddenly unlocking. This grounded approach to combat is a big part of why fans and reviewers alike consistently praise the series for feeling more realistic than most other school fighting manhwa on the market.

Early in the story, Si-eun ends up allied with Ahn Su-ho, known in the English translation as Stephen, who is widely regarded as the strongest fighter in their class. The two are eventually joined by Oh Beom-seok, translated as Bryce, the troubled son of a politician who carries his own heavy baggage from his family life. Together these three form the emotional core of the first arc, and much of what makes their friendship land so well is that the manhwa takes real time to explore their individual traumas rather than treating them as disposable side characters who exist purely to get beaten up.

As the story progresses into its later arcs, Si-eun transfers to a new school called Eunjang High, still visibly haunted by everything he went through during his earlier struggles. At Eunjang he forms new friendships with Park Hu-min, nicknamed Baku, along with Seo Jun-tae and Go Hyun-tak, who goes by the nickname Gotak. This new circle of friends brings a different dynamic to the story, and watching Si-eun slowly let his guard down around these new faces, despite his lingering trust issues, gives the later chapters a surprisingly tender undertone beneath all the violence.

Of course, a new school also means new threats, and the later arcs introduce a much more organized and dangerous inter school criminal gang known as the Union. Led by figures like Na Baek-jin and Geum Seong-je, the Union operates on a much larger and more coordinated scale than the scattered classroom bullies Si-eun dealt with earlier in the story, forcing him and his friends to navigate a genuinely dangerous criminal network rather than just isolated schoolyard conflicts. This escalation keeps the stakes climbing steadily without ever losing the personal, character driven focus that made the earlier arcs so effective.

One of the things that consistently gets praised across reviews is how the manhwa refuses to paint most of its antagonists as purely evil for the sake of being evil. Even many of the story's toughest bullies are eventually revealed to be misguided teenagers shaped by rough circumstances rather than cartoonishly cruel villains, and the series takes the time to humanize several of them once their own backstories come into focus. This willingness to add nuance to characters who could have easily been throwaway obstacles is a big reason the story has aged so well among longtime readers.

Weak Hero ran for three full seasons before concluding in late 2023, and the complete run has since been collected into nineteen physical volumes, though those print collections currently remain available only in the original Korean. Seopass has spoken about the project with real affection in interviews, describing how certain emotional scenes, like Si-eun crying outside a hospital, came to him vividly while imagining the story during ordinary moments like a daily commute. That kind of personal investment from the creator arguably shows in just how carefully the emotional beats of the story are handled throughout its run.

The manhwa's popularity eventually led to a live action adaptation known as Weak Hero Class, though it takes place in something of an alternate continuity rather than directly following the comic's events beat for beat. The first season aired in 2022 through the streaming service Wavve, with a second season following in April 2025 through Netflix, expanding the story's reach to viewers who might never have picked up the original webtoon. Actor Park Ji-hoon stars as the lead, joined by Choi Hyun-wook, Hong Kyung, Ryeoun, and several other young actors filling out the show's expanding cast of students and rivals.

Between its grounded approach to combat, its willingness to give even minor antagonists real emotional depth, and a lead character who wins fights through intelligence rather than brute force, it is easy to see why Weak Hero has become such a respected name within the school action genre. Its blend of brutal violence and genuine emotional storytelling continues to draw new readers in, whether they discover the story through the original webtoon or through its growing live action adaptation.
